Planning your trip to Quito

Climate and seasons

Quito is on the equator, so there is almost no variation in daily temperatures through the year, and its altitude makes it cooler than one would expect, with temperatures from the low 50s °F at night to roughly 70 °F by day. There are two recognized seasons, dry and rainy, but it often sprinkles and sometimes rains hard.

Getting around

Taxis and buses are everywhere and very inexpensive. There are three independent bus systems with enclosed stations where you pay on the way in, and stations close to La Mariscal, where most hotels are. There is no tradition of waiting for people to get off before boarding, which may take some getting used to.

Staying safe

As in every big city, take special care in certain areas. Do not go up El Panecillo on foot; use a taxi even during the day. It is probably best to avoid La Mariscal alone at night, as drunk foreigners are easy targets in this area full of bars and clubs, so stick with a group.
