Planning your trip to Galápagos
Best time to visit
Peak season for naturalist tours is typically December through May, when the seas are the calmest and the weather the warmest. September through November is typically low season, when most boats leave the islands for dry dock.
Climate and seasons
The Galápagos have two seasons: a hot, rainy season from December to June, with high humidity and average temperatures of 26 to 30 °C but generally warm, sunny days, and a cooler season from June to November, with cool winds, an occasional light drizzle called "garúa", and daytime temperatures averaging 20 to 24 °C.
Getting around
Seeing the sites and wildlife of the Galápagos is best done by boat. Over 60 cruise ships of 8 to 100 passengers ply the waters, and most people book well in advance because the boats are usually full in the high season. Be sure the agent you book through is a Galápagos specialist.
Staying safe
In general, crime is not a problem in the Galápagos, though petty crime may occur in the towns and fishermen occasionally stage strikes that affect tourists. Most boats do not have lockable cabins, so keep your items locked in bags. The animal life is mostly docile, with the exception of larger sea lions: bulls vigorously protect their harems and can inflict dangerous bites, so do not snorkel close to sea lion colonies.
