Climate and seasons
Lima lies in a valley surrounded by extremely arid desert and receives on average no more than 3 cm of rain a year. In the summer months, December to February, the weather is usually sunny and hot with an extreme UV index. The rest of the year is overcast, with daytime temperatures between 20 and 30 °C.
Getting around
Lima's public transport network consists of a single metro line, modern buses, coasters and combis (called "micros"), and the system can be confusing for foreign tourists. The metro line is elevated and runs north-south in the eastern part of the metropolitan area, 2 to 3 km east of the historic center and Miraflores, so it does not serve many places where tourists stay or visit.
Staying safe
If you witness a crime, do not intervene unless you are really sure of what you are doing: many criminals, even pickpockets, carry guns or knives. A tried-and-true technique for staying safe in Lima is to keep a low profile: leave a fancy watch at home and do not wear a fine suit or carry a laptop when hailing taxis on the street. If you must go out dressed like a tourist, call a taxi rather than hire one on the spot.
