Climate and seasons
São Paulo has a temperate and highly variable climate; locals say all four seasons can be enjoyed in a day. At 760 metres above sea level it is cooler than normal for its latitude, and ocean winds keep the air humid all year. Rainfall is heavy in summer, sometimes causing flooding; January is the wettest month (about 237 mm) and August the driest (about 40 mm).
Getting around
The fastest and least stressful way to get around is usually by bicycle and public transport, while the experience with cars can be hellish. Peak hours are roughly 06:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, but roads are constantly at maximum capacity, so any incident causes major queues. The cheapest way for tourists is the subway, trains and buses, with a taxi for shorter distances; public transport can be uncomfortably crowded at peak times.
Staying safe
São Paulo, once one of Brazil's most violent cities, drastically reduced crime during the 2000s, but it is too large and diverse to be described by average statistics: two of the most visited areas, Downtown and the Pinheiros subprefecture, have respectively 150% and 50% more violent crime than the city average. Avoid walking in deserted areas at night, or at least avoid walking alone.
