Planning your trip to Verona

Best time to visit

April to June and September are the most pleasant months for walking. The opera season in the Roman arena runs through the summer, which makes evenings special but hotels busier and pricier. July and August are hot; winter is quiet and cool, with a Christmas market in December.

How many days you need

One to two days covers the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza dei Signori, the Castelvecchio and its bridge, and the view from Castel San Pietro. Add a day for Lake Garda or the Valpolicella wine area, both close by.

Getting around

The historic center is compact and best explored on foot. Buses connect the train station with the center, and a shuttle bus runs to the airport. Trains link Verona with Venice, Milan and Bologna, and buses run to towns on Lake Garda.

What to skip

The courtyard of Juliet's House is usually packed, and the famous balcony is a later addition rather than a medieval original, so a quick look is enough. If you plan to visit several monuments and museums, compare the city pass against individual tickets before buying.
