Planning your trip to Lake Como

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October are ideal, with pleasant weather, gardens in bloom in spring and fewer crowds than midsummer. July and August are warm and busy, especially on weekends. In winter many hotels and villa gardens close and ferry services are reduced.

How many days you need

Two to three days covers the central lake villages of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio and a couple of the villas and gardens, such as Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta. Add a day for the town of Como itself or for a walk in the hills above the lake.

Getting around

Ferries are the main way to move between the lake villages, with frequent crossings in the central area during the season. Trains from Milan reach Como and Varenna, and buses run along the shore. The lakeside roads are narrow and busy, so a car is more trouble than help for most visitors.

What to skip

Check the ferry timetable before planning a day, as service is reduced outside the main season and the last boats leave early. Villa opening days and hours vary, and some require booking. Weekends bring day-trippers from Milan, so visit the busiest villages on weekdays if you can.
