Planning your trip to Amalfi Coast

Best time to visit

May, June and September offer warm weather, a swimmable sea and fewer crowds than midsummer. July and August are hot and very busy, and the coast road gets congested. Many hotels, restaurants and ferry routes close or reduce service from November to March.

How many days you need

Three to four days lets you see Positano, Amalfi and Ravello without rushing, walk the Path of the Gods, and take a boat along the coast. Choosing one town as a base and making day trips is easier than moving hotels each night.

Getting around

Ferries link the main towns in the warmer months and are often the most pleasant way to travel. Local buses run along the coast road all year but get crowded, and the road is narrow and winding. Driving and parking are difficult in summer. The towns are built on steep slopes, so expect a lot of stairs.

What to skip

Driving the coast yourself in high season is stressful, and parking is scarce and costly. Check whether your hotel is up a long flight of steps before booking if that would be a problem. Beach space in Positano and Amalfi is small and crowded; many beach areas charge for loungers.
