Planning your trip to Sorrento

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months, with warm weather and easier crowds. July and August are hot and busy, and buses and ferries fill up. Many hotels and some ferry routes close or cut back in the winter months.

How many days you need

Two to four days works well. Sorrento itself takes a day to explore, and it makes a practical base for day trips to Pompeii and Herculaneum, the island of Capri, and the towns of the Amalfi Coast. Staying longer lets you pace those trips instead of doing one every day.

Getting around

The town center is walkable, though the cliff-top setting means stairs or a lift down to the harbor. The Circumvesuviana commuter train runs to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples, and buses run along the coast road to Positano and Amalfi. Ferries and hydrofoils leave the harbor for Capri, Naples and, in season, the Amalfi Coast.

What to skip

The coastal buses are often crowded in summer, and the drive is winding, so take a ferry when the sea is calm. The Circumvesuviana is basic and can be packed; keep an eye on your belongings. Visit Pompeii early in the day with water and sun protection, as the site is large and has little shade.
