Planning your trip to Florence

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October offer the best balance of weather and crowds. Summer is hot and the main museums are crowded; winter is cooler and much quieter, a good time for museum-focused trips.

How many days you need

Two to three days covers the Duomo, the Uffizi, the Accademia and the Oltrarno neighborhood across the river. Add a day or two for day trips to Siena, Pisa, Lucca or the Chianti countryside.

Getting around

The historic center is small and flat, and almost everything is walkable. Much of the center is a restricted traffic zone, so driving in is not practical. Regional trains and buses connect to nearby Tuscan towns. Reserve timed tickets for the Uffizi, the Accademia and the Duomo climb ahead, as they sell out.

What to skip

Waiting in long walk-up lines for the big museums wastes hours in high season; booking a time slot in advance avoids most of it. Restaurants right around the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria tend to be pricier and less interesting than those a few streets away.
