Planning your trip to Zurich

Best time to visit

June to September is the best time for swimming in the lake and river, outdoor bars and walks in the hills around the city. Spring and autumn are pleasant and calmer. December has Christmas markets, and winter makes a good base for day trips to the mountains.

How many days you need

Two days covers the old town on both sides of the Limmat, the lakefront, a museum or two and the view from the Uetliberg. Add days for trips by train to Lucerne, the Rhine Falls or the Alps.

Getting around

Trams, buses, S-Bahn trains and lake boats all run on one integrated ticket system, and the network is frequent and punctual. The center is compact and walkable. Switzerland's rail network makes day trips easy, and a rail pass can be worth pricing out if you plan several.

What to skip

Switzerland is expensive, and eating every meal in sit-down restaurants adds up quickly; supermarkets and takeaway counters are a common, respectable way to keep costs down. Check opening hours, as many shops close early on Saturday and most are closed on Sunday.
