Planning your trip to Phuket
Climate and seasons
Phuket is hot and humid throughout the year. The hot season is generally considered to be from March to early May. During the summer monsoon season (May to October) mornings and afternoons are sunny and clear, but it tends to rain in the evenings and water clarity goes down. Locals consider November to February the "cool" season, when the weather is quite tolerable.
Getting around
Phuket is a large island and you need some form of transport to get around. Hotels generally offer shuttle buses into Phuket Town and also have taxi and car hire facilities. Songthaews are the cheapest public transport: pink within Phuket Town and blue to other beaches and areas.
Staying safe
Particularly in the summer monsoon season, strong currents on many beaches make drownings depressingly common, so heed the warning flags. Crime has increased in the Phuket area: pickpocketing and muggings occur regularly in tourist areas, especially at night, so avoid unlit side streets. Be wary of strangers who approach you unsolicited, particularly anyone trying to lure you into gambling, which is illegal.
