Planning your trip to Mombasa
Climate and seasons
Mombasa has a tropical climate and, at just 4 degrees south of the Equator, temperatures vary relatively little through the year. There is a major rainy season between mid-April and late May and a minor wet season in October and November.
Getting around
Traffic can seem chaotic, and traffic laws are not respected even when police are present. There is no regular public transport network: the closest equivalent is the matatus (minivans), which are cheap but crammed. Ask at your hotel what the going rate is.
Staying safe
Several countries have warned that the city centre is not safe at night, that car-jacking is widespread and that robberies on beaches after sunset can occur. Use common sense; if you go out at night, take a taxi rather than walking or using a motorbike taxi or tuk-tuk. Watch out for pickpockets.
