Planning your trip to Salzburg

Best time to visit

May to September brings the best weather for the old town, gardens and day trips into the lakes and mountains. The Salzburg Festival in July and August fills the city with music lovers, so book early if visiting then. December's Advent markets make winter a charming option, and the nearby Alps are close for snow.

How many days you need

One to two days covers the old town, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabell Palace and Gardens, Mozart's Birthplace and Hellbrunn Palace with its trick fountains. Add a day or two for the Salzkammergut lakes and Hallstatt, the salt mines, or Berchtesgaden just across the German border.

Getting around

The old town is compact and walkable on both sides of the Salzach river. A funicular climbs to the fortress, and trolleybuses and buses cover the rest of the city, including the airport. Trains connect Salzburg with Vienna and Munich, and regional buses serve the lake district.

What to skip

Hallstatt gets extremely crowded with day-trippers; arrive early or late in the day, or visit quieter lakeside villages in the Salzkammergut instead. The Getreidegasse shopping street is packed at midday, so walk it early in the morning or in the evening.
