Planning your trip to Helsinki

Best time to visit

June to August brings long, light evenings, outdoor markets and the best weather for the harbor islands. May and September are calmer and still pleasant. Winter is cold and dark, but it suits saunas, winter swimming and the seasonal lights in December.

How many days you need

Two days covers the Market Square and harbor, the cathedral and Senate Square, the design district, the Rock Church and a ferry out to the Suomenlinna sea fortress. Add a day for a public sauna, the Nuuksio forests nearby or a ferry trip across the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn.

Getting around

The center is compact and easy to walk. Trams, buses, the metro, commuter trains and the Suomenlinna ferry all run on the same tickets, which are easily bought by phone app. A direct train links the airport with the central station.

What to skip

Finland is expensive, and eating every meal in restaurants adds up; lunch menus on weekdays are usually the better-value way to eat out. Suomenlinna is exposed to wind and weather, so bring a warm layer even in summer. Check ferry times back to the city before you settle in on the island.
