Planning your trip to Wellington

Climate and seasons

Wellington is known as "Windy Wellington", often said to be the world's windiest city, with an average wind speed of 27 km/h. The prevailing wind is from the northwest, but the strongest winds are southerly.

Getting around

It is easy to get around the central city on foot, as it is very compact and pedestrian-friendly. Wellington has an extensive public transport network of buses, trains and ferries, coordinated by Metlink.

Staying safe

Wellington is reasonably safe at night, but common sense should prevail, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Violent crime against tourists is very rare, but opportunistic petty crime occurs: lock valuables away and stay in well-lit areas at night. Vehicle break-ins are common, especially in shopping-mall and park-and-ride car parks, so remove all valuables.
