Planning your trip to Mumbai

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Mumbai is during the winter, from October to February, when humidity is lower and the climate is pleasant. Summer (March to May) is hot and humid, and June to September is the monsoon, when heavy rain can flood the city two or three times and disrupt normal life.

Getting around

Most Mumbai residents rely on public transport because of the lack of parking, traffic bottlenecks and poor road conditions. The Mumbai Suburban Railway, known as the "Locals", is an icon and vital artery of the city, and a ride on it should be on every visitor's agenda. The m-Indicator app has bus and train routes.

Staying safe

Mumbai is considered one of India's safer major cities, with low rates of violent crime against foreigners. Opportunistic crimes such as pickpocketing, bag snatching and phone theft in crowded areas are more common. The monsoon can make travel from the airports difficult because of rain and flooding.
