Planning your trip to Johannesburg
Climate and seasons
Johannesburg's weather is generally regarded as excellent. In summer (December to February) temperatures reach the mid-30s Celsius with occasional spectacular afternoon thunderstorms; winter temperatures can drop below freezing, but snow is extremely rare. The city is at 1,750 metres above sea level, so newcomers can easily get out of breath.
Getting around
Johannesburg was built for the car, so public transport is still developing. The Gautrain is a good, clean and safe fast train linking the airport, Marlboro, Midrand, Rosebank, Pretoria and Centurion. Metro double-decker buses run along Oxford Road; it is generally a bad idea to use minibus taxis unless accompanied by locals.
Staying safe
Johannesburg has stubbornly high crime levels, and armed security guards are a common sight. Ask local people, such as hotel staff, what to do and when to do it. Things have improved enormously since the 1980s, but keep security in mind and stay alert in unfamiliar surroundings.
