Planning your trip to Beijing

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Beijing is September and October, during the "Golden Autumn". In spring, dust storms from the Gobi Desert can turn the sky yellow and significantly reduce air quality, and masks are advisable. Summer can be oppressively hot and the tourist crowds tend to be the largest, while winter is cold and dry with infrequent but beautiful snow.

Getting around

Beijing has a world-class public transport network, with an extensive subway reaching most major tourist attractions, complemented by frequent buses and shared bicycles outside stations. Many locals use ride-hailing apps such as DiDi, and visitors can order a taxi in English through the Alipay app or WeChat. Do not count on finding a taxi driver who speaks English well.

Staying safe

Beijing is a very safe city, with violent crime incredibly rare, and it is generally safe for women to walk alone at night. Be vigilant about scams and petty crime in tourist-heavy places like Tiananmen Square and on routes to the Great Wall, and keep belongings secure in crowds. The emergency numbers valid in almost every part of China are 110 (police), 119 (fire) and 120 (medical).
