Planning your trip to Sapporo

Climate and seasons

Sapporo has four distinct seasons. Summers are generally cool and pleasant, making it a popular place to escape the heat that grips much of the rest of Japan. Winters are harsh by Japanese standards: Sapporo is one of the snowiest cities in the world, with about 6 metres of snowfall a year, and hosts the Sapporo Snow Festival every February.

Getting around

Unusually for a Japanese city, Sapporo is logically organized on a strict grid. The main thoroughfare, Ō-Dōri, runs east-west and divides the city into north and south, while the Sōsei-Gawa divides it into west and east, so addresses in the center are of the type "North X West Y". Most businesses still provide maps or landmarks.

Staying safe

Downtown Sapporo is a smoke-free area: smoking on public streets and in public buildings can get you fined, so use the smoking areas in cafes.
