Planning your trip to Tallinn

Best time to visit

May to September is the most pleasant time, with long days and outdoor cafés in the Old Town. Summer is busiest, especially on days when cruise ships are in port. December brings a Christmas market to Town Hall Square; the rest of winter is cold and quiet.

How many days you need

One to two days covers the walled Old Town, Toompea hill and its viewpoints, Town Hall Square and a few of the medieval towers. Add a day for the Kadriorg park and palace, the Telliskivi creative quarter or the seaside museums at the harbor.

Getting around

The Old Town is small and pedestrian, with cobbles and some steep lanes, so good shoes help. Trams and buses cover the wider city, and a tram runs from the airport toward the center. Ferries cross to Helsinki from the passenger port a short walk from the Old Town.

What to skip

The Old Town fills with day visitors from cruise ships and ferries in the middle of the day; walk it early or in the evening for a calmer look. Restaurants on Town Hall Square charge more for the location, and side streets are often better value. Check the bill before paying in the busiest tourist spots.
