Planning your trip to Mykonos

Best time to visit

June and September are a good balance of warm weather, open businesses and slightly fewer crowds. July and August are the busiest and most expensive, and the island is known for strong summer winds. Much of the island closes down between November and March.

How many days you need

Two to three days covers Mykonos Town, Little Venice, the windmills and a few beaches. Add a day for a boat trip to the archaeological island of Delos, which is one of the most important ancient sites in Greece.

Getting around

Mykonos Town is a maze of narrow pedestrian lanes, easiest explored on foot. Buses run from town to the main beaches, and water taxis serve several beaches along the south coast. Taxis are limited in peak season, so book transfers ahead or expect waits. Ferries connect the island with Athens' ports and other Cycladic islands.

What to skip

Beach clubs and waterfront bars can charge high prices for sunbeds, food and drinks, so check the menu and sunbed price before you sit down. Delos boats don't run in rough weather and the site has little shade, so bring water and a hat. Ferry schedules change with the season and wind, so confirm before booking onward connections.
