Planning your trip to Seattle

Best time to visit

July to September is the driest and sunniest period and the best time for the waterfront, ferries and mountain views. Autumn and spring are mild but often cloudy and damp. Winter is grey and rainy in the city, while the nearby mountains get snow.

How many days you need

Two to three days covers Pike Place Market, the waterfront, the Seattle Center with the Space Needle, and a neighborhood such as Capitol Hill, Fremont or Ballard. Add a day or two for a ferry to Bainbridge Island, Mount Rainier National Park or the San Juan Islands.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable but hilly. Light rail links the airport with downtown and several neighborhoods, and buses, streetcars and a short monorail fill in the gaps. Washington State Ferries cross Puget Sound from the downtown terminal. A car is most useful for trips to the mountains and national parks.

What to skip

Pike Place Market is packed in the middle of the day, especially when cruise ships are in port; go in the morning for a calmer visit. Don't rely on clear views of Mount Rainier, which is often hidden by cloud. Bring a light rain jacket in every season except high summer.
