Planning your trip to San Diego
Best time to visit
September and October are often the best months: the ocean is at its warmest, the summer crowds have thinned and the skies are usually clear. March to May is mild but can bring the grey mornings locals call May Gray and June Gloom, which often burn off by afternoon. Summer is warm, busy and most expensive, especially near the beaches. Winter is cool but sunny, and gray whales pass offshore from roughly December to March.
How many days you need
Three to four days covers Balboa Park and its museums, the zoo, the Gaslamp Quarter and Old Town, a day on the beaches of La Jolla or Coronado, and an afternoon in a neighborhood like North Park or Little Italy. Add a day for Tijuana across the border or the mountains and desert to the east.
Getting around
The city is spread out, so a car is the easiest way to combine beaches, parks and neighborhoods in one day. The trolley connects downtown, Old Town, the border crossing and the university area, and buses and a ferry to Coronado fill some gaps. Downtown, Little Italy and the Gaslamp are walkable, and the boardwalks along Pacific and Mission Beach are good for cycling. Parking at popular beaches fills early on summer weekends.
What to skip
Balboa Park has more museums than most people can see in a day, so pick two or three rather than trying for all of them. The Gaslamp Quarter is lively but its restaurants and bars cater to conventions and visitors; neighborhoods a short drive north offer more local character. If you plan to cross into Mexico, carry your passport and expect the return line to take time, especially on Sunday afternoons.
