Planning your trip to Maui
Best time to visit
April to May and September to October bring warm weather, calmer seas and lower prices between the two peak seasons. Mid-December to March is the busiest and most expensive period, but it is also when humpback whales gather offshore. Summer is warm and dry on the leeward side. The windward side and the road to Hana are wetter year-round, and hurricane season runs through late summer and autumn, though direct hits are rare.
How many days you need
Five to seven days is a comfortable stay. That allows a sunrise or sunset at Haleakalā, a full day on the road to Hana, snorkeling at Molokini or along the south and west coasts, time in the historic towns and plenty of beach days. Shorter visits mean choosing between the volcano and the Hana drive.
Getting around
A rental car is essential, as the resort areas, the volcano, Hana and the upcountry towns are far apart and public buses are limited. Book cars early for peak season. Sunrise at the Haleakalā summit requires a timed reservation made in advance. The road to Hana is narrow and winding with many one-lane bridges; start early, allow a full day and pull over to let local traffic pass.
What to skip
Resort fees and parking charges add substantially to the advertised room rates, so check the total before booking. Reef-safe sunscreen is required by local law, and ordinary sunscreen can be confiscated or unsold on the island. Do not touch or approach sea turtles and other marine life, and respect areas that remain closed or sensitive after the Lahaina wildfires.
