Planning your trip to Tokyo

Best time to visit

Late March to early April brings cherry blossoms and mild weather, and October to November is comfortable with autumn color. Both are popular, so book ahead. Summer is hot and very humid, with a rainy spell in June and typhoon risk in late summer. Winter is cold but usually dry and clear, and often the quietest time for sights.

How many days you need

Four to five days lets you see several very different districts, from the old temple area of Asakusa to Shibuya, Shinjuku and the markets and gardens in between. Many visitors add a day trip to Nikko, Kamakura or the Mount Fuji area, so a week is easy to fill.

Getting around

The train and subway network is extensive, punctual and easy to use with a rechargeable transit card on your phone or in your hand. Station signs are in English, but big stations can be confusing, so allow extra time for transfers. Trains stop running around midnight, so check the last service before a late dinner. Taxis are plentiful but slower and costlier than rail.

What to skip

Trying to see every district in a short trip leads to a lot of time underground. Pick two or three areas per day. Rush hour trains are extremely crowded, so avoid them with luggage. Carry some cash, since small restaurants and shrines may not take cards, and be quiet on trains, where phone calls are discouraged.
