Planning your trip to Crete

Best time to visit

May, June, September and October are the best months, warm enough to swim with fewer crowds than midsummer. July and August are hot and busy on the coast. Spring brings wildflowers and good hiking conditions, while many resort businesses close over winter.

How many days you need

Crete is Greece's largest island, and a week is a sensible minimum to see more than one region. Allow a day or two around Heraklion for the Knossos palace and the archaeological museum, a couple of days in Chania's old harbor area, and extra time for beaches, gorges and mountain villages.

Getting around

A rental car gives the most freedom, as many beaches, villages and trailheads are poorly served by public transport. Intercity buses connect the main towns along the north coast and some southern destinations. Mountain roads are winding and slow, so allow more time than distances suggest.

What to skip

Don't try to see the whole island from a single base in a short stay; driving between the east and west ends takes hours. Popular beaches such as Balos and Elafonisi get very crowded in summer, so go early. Samaria Gorge opens only in the warmer months and can close in bad weather, so check before planning around it.
