Planning your trip to Budapest

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October bring mild weather ideal for walking both sides of the Danube. July and August are hot and busy but good for the outdoor thermal pools. Winter is cold, but the thermal baths and the Christmas markets make it a pleasant season for a city break.

How many days you need

Two to three days covers Buda Castle, the Fisherman's Bastion, Parliament, a thermal bath and an evening in the Jewish Quarter. Add a day for a trip up the Danube Bend to Szentendre or Visegrád.

Getting around

The metro, trams and buses are extensive and reliable; tram lines along the Danube give some of the best views of the city. Both the Pest side and Castle Hill are walkable, and there are buses and a funicular for the climb up to the castle. Validate tickets before boarding, as inspections are common.

What to skip

Some bars and restaurants in busy nightlife areas have been known to present inflated bills, often after an invitation from a friendly stranger; check menu prices before ordering. Use licensed taxis or a ride app rather than hailing unmarked cars, and avoid street money changers.
