Planning your trip to Dublin

Best time to visit

May to September brings the longest days and the mildest weather, though rain is possible in any month, so pack a waterproof layer whatever the season. Around St. Patrick's Day in March the city is festive but crowded and accommodation is in high demand. Winter is cool and wet, but the pubs, museums and live music keep the city lively.

How many days you need

Two to three days covers Trinity College and the Book of Kells, Dublin Castle, the national museums and galleries, the Guinness Storehouse and an evening of traditional music. Add a day for a coastal trip to Howth or Dalkey, or a longer day trip to the Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough or the ancient sites of the Boyne Valley.

Getting around

The center is compact and easy to walk. The DART commuter rail runs along the coast, the Luas trams cross the city, and buses fill in the rest; a Leap Card can be used across them and is usually cheaper than paying cash fares. Buses from the airport run frequently into the center.

What to skip

Temple Bar is lively but is the most expensive area for a drink; pubs a short walk away often have traditional music sessions and a more local crowd. Many of the national museums and galleries are free, so they are worth prioritizing on a budget.
