Planning your trip to Key West

Best time to visit

December to April is the most popular period, with warm, dry weather and calm seas, but also the highest prices and busiest streets. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon showers, and hurricane season runs from June to November. Late spring and early winter can be a good balance of weather and crowds.

How many days you need

Two to three days is enough for Duval Street, the historic Old Town, the Ernest Hemingway Home, the Southernmost Point marker and the sunset at Mallory Square, plus a snorkel or boat trip. Add a day for a trip to Dry Tortugas National Park by ferry or seaplane.

Getting around

Key West is small and flat, and walking or cycling is the easiest way to explore the Old Town; parking is scarce and expensive. Scooters, electric carts and a local bus are other options. Driving down from the mainland along the Overseas Highway takes several hours and can be slow in busy periods.

What to skip

Dry Tortugas ferry and seaplane seats sell out well ahead in peak season, so book early if the park is a priority. The Southernmost Point marker often has a long photo line in the middle of the day; go early or late. The island's beaches are small and rocky compared with other parts of Florida, so plan boat trips for the best water time.
